The 4Cs of Diamonds Explained

Buying a diamond is an exciting milestone, but with so many terms to understand, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming at first. To help simply the process, the 4Cs of diamonds (Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat) was created by the Gemological Institute of America (or GIA) as the universal standard used to evaluate diamond quality. Understanding each of the 4Cs can help you compare diamonds, determine what matters most to you, and find a stone that suits both your style and budget best.

1. Cut

Diamond cut refers to how well a diamond’s facets interact with light, which can influence its brilliance, fire, and sparkle. A diamond's cut and shape are not the same thing though: shape describes the outline, while cut refers to its proportions and symmetry.

The four grades of diamond cut range from Excellent to Poor. A well-cut diamond can appear exceptionally bright and lively, making cut an important consideration when choosing a stone.

2. Colour

Diamond colour measures how much colour is present in a diamond. For traditional white diamonds, the scale begins with D (which is completely colourless) and ends at Z (which has increasingly noticeable yellow or brown tones).

While higher colour grades can be rarer, subtle differences between grades may not always be visible to the untrained eye. Depending on your setting and personal preference, a slightly warmer diamond can be a beautiful choice and offer more flexibility within your budget.

3. Clarity

Diamond clarity refers to the presence of internal inclusions and external blemishes, or the lack of either entirely. This clarity scale has terms such as Flawless (FL), Internal Flawless (IF), Very Very Slightly included 1 (VVS1), with the lowest clarity grade ending at I3 (Included 3). Depending on the stone or its size, inclusions can sometimes be seen with the naked eye starting at SI2 (Slightly Included 2).

A higher clarity grade means fewer visible characteristics, but a diamond doesn’t necessarily need to be flawless to look beautiful. Many diamonds with lower clarity grades can appear perfectly clean to the naked eye, making clarity an area where thoughtful selection can provide excellent value.

4. Carat

Carat weight measures how much a diamond actually weighs in metric carats, not just its physical size. One metric carat equals 0.2 grams and is divided into 100 points. For example, a 0.50-carat diamond weighs half a carat.

A higher carat weight generally means a larger and rarer diamond, but two diamonds of the same carat weight can have very different values depending on their cut, colour, and clarity. This still makes carat a very important consideration alongside the other 3Cs.

But which of the 4Cs is most important?

There is no single “best” combination of the 4Cs. The right diamond depends on your personal preferences, desired style, and budget.
